  • Conseco Insurance launches six new products, including one annuity, three life insurance products and one supplemental health insurance product.  Washington National launches two annuities.  Bankers Life launches one benefit rider and health and life products designed for seniors.
  • Washington National Insurance Company and Legacy Marketing Group sign an agreement to jointly develop fixed annuities and distribute them independently.

  • Conseco acquires three health insurance marketing companies, establishing a supplemental health distribution subsidiary.
  • Green Tree Financial Corporation is renamed "Conseco Finance Corp."
  • As part of its plans to strengthen its capital structure and lower its funding costs, Conseco sells $500 million of Series F Common-Linked Convertible Preferred Stock to Thomas H. Lee Company, reduces its common stock cash dividend and announces plans to manage the growth of the finance receivables at Conseco Finance.

  • Conseco opens a 100,000 square foot office building at 1289 W. 122nd Street in the Carmel headquarters complex.
  • Conseco acquires Pioneer Financial Services, Inc., a national life and health insurer.
  • Conseco acquires Colonial Penn Life Insurance, a leading direct marketer of whole life insurance to America's seniors.
  • Conseco opens a 105,000 square foot office building/conference center at 530 College Drive in the Carmel headquarters complex.
  • Conseco acquires Washington National Corp., a national provider of life insurance, annuities and specialty health insurance.

  • CRM acquires Wells & Company of Indianapolis, creating the largest independent property/casualty agency in Indiana and one of the 50 largest such agencies in the United States.
  • Conseco common stock splits two for one.
  • Conseco is named to the Fortune 500.
  • Conseco opens a 103,000 square foot insurance operations center at 11799 College Ave. in the Carmel headquarters complex.
  • Conseco and Life Partners Group (LPG) merges. 
  • Conseco acquires the remaining interests in ALH and BLH not already owned by Conseco.
  • Conseco purchases a 115,000 square foot office building at 55- Congressional Blvd. in the Carmel headquarters complex.
  • Conseco acquires American Travellers Corp., a leading provider of ling-term care insurance.
  • Conseco acquires Transport Holdings, Inc., a leading provider of cancer insurance.

Conseco History: 1995

  • Conseco acquires the chares of CCP it does not already own; CCP is merged into Conseco, and CARCO and BSL become wholly owned subsidiaries of Conseco.
  • Conseco increases its stake in BLH, reaching 81% in June and 90% early in 1996.

1994

  • Conseco forms its second acquisition partnership, Conseco Capital Partners II, L.P. (Partnership II), with $624 million of equity capital commitments from institutional investors.
  • Western National Corp. (WNH), a new company established to be the holding company for WNL, completes an initial public offering of common stock; Conseco sells 60% of its interest in WNH in the IPO.  Conseco and Kemper Corp. agree to merge, but later terminate their merger agreement.
  • Partnership II acquires American Life Holdings, Inc. (ALH).  Conseco sells its remaining 40% interest in WNH.

1993

  • Conseco purchases a 60,000 square foot office building at 501 Congressional Blvd., in the Carmel headquarters complex.  Conseco's insurance operations department move to the Congressional Ave. building.
  • Conseco makes a controlling investment in Bankmark, a New Jersey-based bank marketing company.
  • Bankers Life Holding Corp. (BLH), a new company established to be the holding company for BLC, completes an initial public offering of common stock.
  • Partnership I winds up its activities.
  • Conseco increases its stake in BLH.

1992

  • Conseco's commons tock splits two for one.
  • CCP Insurance, INC. (CCP), a new company established to be the holding company for GARCO, JNL and BSL, completes an initial public offering of common stock.
  • Partnership I acquires Bankers Life and Casualty Co. (BLC).
  • Partnership I moves BLC's data processing operation to Conseco's facility in Carmel (1Q93) and consolidates BLC's other operations in 300,000 square feet of space at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago (4Q93).
  • Conseco expands its data processing center, doubling its size from 40,000 to 80,000 square feet.
  • Conseco forms Conseco Private Capital Group.

1991

  • Partnership I acquires Beneficial Standard Life Insurance Co. (BSL).
  • Conseco's common stock splits two for one.
  • Conseco opens a 52,000 square foot service center in its Carmel headquarters complex.

1990

  • Conseco sells LIL.
  • Conseco opens a 40,000 square foot data processing center in its Carmel headquarters complex.
  • Conseco forms its first acquisition partnership, Conseco Capital partners, L.P. (Partnership I), with $70 million (later expanded to $100 million) of equity commitments from institutional investors.
  • Conseco opens a 40,000 square foot expansion of its Pennsylvania Street Carmel headquarters.
  • Partnership I acquires Great American Reserve Insurance Co. (GARCO) and Jefferson National Life Insurance Co. (JNL).

Conseco History: 1985-1989

1989

  • Conseco acquires National Fidelity Life Insurance Co. (NFL).
  • Conseco forms Conseco Risk Management, Inc. (CRM), a property/casualty insurance agency.

1988

  • Conseco adopts a policy of paying a regular quarterly cash dividend on its common stock.

1987

  • Conseco moves its headquarters into new facilities (totaling 80,000 square feet) at 11825 N. Pennsylvania Street in Carmel.
  • Conseco acquires Western national life Insurance Co. (WNL) and retains its operations center in Amarillo, Texas.

1986

  • Conseco acquires Lincoln Income Life (LIL).
  • Conseco common stock is listed for trading on the NYSE.
  • Conseco acquires Bankers National life Insurance Co. (BNL).

1985

  • Conseco acquires Lincoln American Life Insurance Co. (LAL)
  • Conseco sells CNL.
  • Conseco completes its initial public offering of common stock, which begins trading in the over-the-counter market.

1984

  • SNI changes its name to Conseco, Inc.

1983

  • The company acquires Consolidated National Life Insurance Co. (CNL) and combines its operations with those of SNL.

1982

  • The company begins insurance operations by acquiring Executive Income Life Insurance Co. (which was later renamed Security National life Insurance Co. - SNL).

1979

  • The company is incorporated as Security National of Indiana Corp. (SNI).  The primary activity of the company until 1982 is raising capital.  Its offices are located at 11550 N. Meridian Street in Carmel, Indiana.
